2004 May 24 - R.Garros: Rusedski out in R1

Greg Rusedski has yet to find any form this year as he crashed in straight sets 7-6(7) 6-0 6-0 to Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the first round of Roland Garros in Paris.

In the first set Greg matched the young Spaniard shot for shot which eventually led to a close tie-breaker which he lost 9-7. Whether this exposed a lack of self belief by the British No.2 is anyone's guess, but he didn't win one game in the remaining two sets, losing them both 6-0.

After the match Greg said:

"I gave it my best. Obviously you're not happy whenever you lose. But I just lost to a guy who is much better than me on this surface.

"He was one shot better than me on everything. In the last two sets he must have made just one unforced error or two."

Greg will now set his sights on the Surbiton Trophy pre-Wimbledon tournament beginning on the 31st May.
