2004 Apr 11 - Davis Cup: GB secure win over Lux!

Great Britain clinched victory over Luxembourg in their Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group 1 tie with Tim Henman crushing Gilles Muller 7-6(2) 6-2 6-1 in Rubber 4 (of 5) to take an invincible 3-1 lead.

The first set was by far the closest due to the Brits taking longer to settle into the match and having their serve broken early on. This also led to set points on the Henman serve which were swiftly averted to force a tie-break. With Luxembourg picking up just two points in the breaker the first was in the bag for Great Britain. Sets two and three then became nothing more than routine encounters as the Brits comfortably held serve while breaking Luxembourg at will.

After the match Tim said:

"To begin with, I didn't feel I was getting forward enough.

"The first set was definitely up for grabs and early on he was probably the one dictating most of the points.

"But I felt very good physically and mentally and I was ready to stay out there as long as it took."

And a jubilant Jeremy Bates (British Davis Cup Captain) added:

"It has been one of the most enjoyable weeks I've ever had.

"So many positives have come out of the three days of this tie. Greg has returned to the team and Tim has been outstanding.

"We came into a situation where we were expected to win but got the job done extremely professionally."

In the final match (Rubber 5) it was Greg Rusedski who was given the opportunity of getting a competitive - pressure-free - singles match under his belt as he was given the task of dismantling Mike Scheidweiler. The British No.2 didn't disappoint as he secured a 6-3 7-6(5) straight sets victory which gave Great Britain a 4-1 victory over Luxembourg.

After the match an upbeat Greg said:

"I still think I have a realistic chance to do well in the majors and particularly in the grass-court season.

"I played reasonably well and it will get easier in every match. I'm happy to get the first one out of the way with a win and now it is a case of taking it one day at a time."
