2005 Jun 15 - Agassi withdraws from Wimbledon
Andre Agassi will not be gracing the grass courts of the All England Club for the Wimbledon Championships
this year following persistent sciatic lower back pain.
This will come as a huge disappointment to the fans who last saw Andre at Wimbledon in 2003 - he withdrew
from the event in 2004 due to a hip problem.
Andre's team faxed a statement to the AELTC stating:
"Andre Agassi regrets he will have to withdraw from the gentlemen's singles due to injury.
"Mr Agassi says in a fax that it is a regrettable decision and he will miss playing in the most prestigious
tournament in the world."
Although the 1992 champion has yet to announce his retirement, there is growing concern among his legion of
British fans that he will not return to Wimbledon as rumours continue to circulate that he is likely to retire
after the US Open in September.
Also withdrawn from Wimbledon this year due to injury are:
Men: Carlos Moya (shoulder), Gaston Gaudio (shoulder) and Albert Costa (knee)
Women: Jennifer Capriati (shoulder), Alicia Molik (inner ear infection)
