2005 Apr 12 - Rusedski defeated by Federer

Greg Rusedski crashed 6-4 4-6 6-2 to Swiss genius Roger Federer in the opening round of the Tennis Masters Monte-Carlo.

Despite breaking early on to lead 3-1, Greg was unable to hold on and a double break from the Swiss followed.

The second set was more like a training session for the World No.1, as he was in total control and able to mix up his shots at will without compromising the outcome of the match.

Speaking afterwards the ever respectful Federer said:

"It's never nice to go behind early in your first match on clay. But I felt the conditions didn't favour him today.

"It was very slow and that meant he didn't get many free points on his serve, even though it's still up there at 120mph."

A disappointed Greg added:

"Anybody that's playing Roger right now is going to have a very hard time."
