2004 Oct 15 - Rusedski defeats Johansson

Greg Rusedski defeated Swede Joachim Johansson 7-6(5) 6-7(1) 7-6(7) to reach the semi-final of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, Russia.

With both players serving consistently well it was no surprise that all three sets went to a tie-break. Greg eased the first set breaker 7-5 then faltering 7-1 in second before winning a tight third 9-7.

There were 65 aces in the match with Joachim shading the scoring 33-32 but the telling factor was the number of unforced errors from the Swede.

After the match Greg said:

"I think I'm getting better and my standard is improving in every match.

"I'm getting back to the old way I used to play a few years back.

"My mental approach was better, I was fighting from the first ball to the last."

In the semi-final Greg will be up against Slovak Dominick Hrbaty who he has defeated in both their previous meetings.
