2004 Sep 27 - Davis Cup: Look to the future
Jeremy Bates (Great Britain Davis Cup Captain) is calling on youngsters Alex Bogdanovic and US Open
boys champion Andrew Murray to fight for a place in the British starting line-up next year.
Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski are now both in their 30's and yet there isn't any other British players
challenging their dominance as British No's 1 and 2 respectively.
"Tim and Greg may or may not play next year, but sooner or later other people will have to step up.
"I told Alex and Andy that they weren't there to make up the numbers."
On the 30th September Great Britain will find out who they will face in the Euro/Africa Zone group but will
be unable to contest another Elite 16 World Group Play-off until 2006. The timescales should play into the hands of the
British youngsters Alex and Andrew in terms of their development and familiarity with being involved in Davis Cup squad.
"Alex has already played Davis Cup and both of them have been wonderful team members - there's a wonderful
"Andy is somebody who is mature for his years and I wouldn't have any hesitation putting them in.
"Certainly, if they keep working as they have been they'll put themselves in a position to play next year,
and I'll pick them."
