2004 Jul 26 - US Open: Brits in qualifying

Alex Bogdanovic has reached the third qualifying round of US Open as his run of good form continues since his funding was dropped by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). He will now face the Frenchman Julien Varlet with the winner taking their place in the main US Open draw.

Alex defeated Croatian Roko Karanusic 6-3 6-4 in the first round and Czech Jiri Vanek 6-3 7-5 in the second round.

Arvind Parmar started well as he defeated Brazilian Bruno Soares 6-3 7-6(5) in the first round but then crashed 6-4 7-6(2) to Austrian Alexander Peya in the second round.

Female British interest ended in the second round as Elena Baltacha was crushed 6-1 6-1 by Indonesian Angelique Widjaja after a convincing 6-4 6-4 win over Slovak Eva Fislova in the first round.

Jane O'Donoghue was unlucky not to reach the second round a she was defeated in two tie-breaks 7-6(4) 7-6(4) by Argentine Vanina Garcia Sokol.
