2004 Jul 28 - Henman defeats Zabaleta in Toronto
Tim Henman crushed Argentine Mariano Zabaleta 6-4 6-1 in the first round of the
Tennis Masters Toronto in Canada.
Despite losing his serve in the 10th game of the first set, the British No.1 wasted
no time in breaking back and claiming the set. There was no such lapse in the second set
as Tim broke the Argentine twice to claim a well deserved win.
The match had been postponed by a day due to heavy rain which means Tim may be forced to
play two matches on Thursday.
After the match Tim said:
"It was great to finally get onto court.
"There were beautiful conditions out there. Neither of us played our best match, but it
was good to get the win."
And added on his personal website:
"It wasn't the best match I've ever played by any stretch of the imagination, but it was
important to get the win, which is what I did.
"It was important to get the first set as it meant I could relax and open my shoulders a bit
in the second set.
"Overall, I was pleased with my tactics and I thought I mixed up my gameplan well - generally
trying to keep the rallies short and using the chip-charge whenever I got the opportunity."
In the second round Tim will face the mighty Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten and if victorious he
will then face either the Czech Jan Hernych or Australian Todd Reid.
