2004 Jun 08 - Stella: Flanagan drops Philippoussis

Ian Flanagan defeated 2003 Wimbledon finalist Australian Mark Philippoussis in the first round of the Stella Artois Championships with a stunning 7-6(2) 7-6(3) victory.

After the match Ian said:

"I knew if I got the ball in play I had a chance. I've been playing well - returning and serving well.

"It is all about confidence, if you have a couple of good wins you think you can mix it with these guys.

"I had some good results as a junior but it's all about taking them through to the senior game. When I came back after glandular fever it was an uphill struggle but you just have to keep on going.

"There are so many talented British players that don't get the backing and end up packing it in."

Ian is currently ranked 866th in the world but this result will see him rise much higher next month. Mark Philippoussis added:

"It doesn't matter what someone is ranked when you get out there. I just couldn't do anything."
