2004 Mar 17 - Rusedski named in Davis Cup squad
Jeremy Bates (British Davis Cup Captain) has named Greg Rusedski in the
British Davis Cup squad to face Luxembourg on 9th April.
Greg has not played any competitive tennis since his first round Australian Open exit
to Albert Costa in January due to the drug charges hanging over his head. But since being
cleared by an independent tribunal his first match could be alongside his fellow Brits in Luxembourg.
Making up the rest of the squad will be the usual suspects in Tim Henman and Arvind Parmar,
but new boy Jonathan Murray will replace the now retired Miles Maclagan.
"We are thrilled to have Greg back for the tie and his experience of Davis Cup will be a
tremendous boost for the team.
"I think the best place for Greg is back on the tennis court. He has got to work
on his fitness but I have no hesitation in believing we can get him back into great shape.
"Greg is a great team member and a great influence on all the younger ones. He is
undefeated in Davis Cup doubles with Tim and for those reasons of course he was always going to be considered.
"Johnny has earned his place in this squad on the merit of his doubles results over the last 12 months.
"When you work as hard as Johnny does in training you will see the benefit in improved
results and that has undoubtedly happened for him this year."
