2003 Dec 04 - Boris Becker is LTA ambassador
As we continue to wait for a British tennis prodigy to emerge, the LTA have employed
German tennis sensation Boris Becker as an ambassador with the aim of speeding up the process.
"It's very important in this country. We're talking about the next Tim Henman or the next Greg Rusedski.
"It is important to have English players in Wimbledon, on top of the world rankings.
"Tennis is fun and gave me everything I have today."
The idea is that Boris, along with John McEnroe and Prime Minister Tony Blair promote tennis in inner city areas.
Considering Tony Blair has let down areas such as Croydon with investment in not only new housing
but youth activities, we can't understand exactly how a fleeting visit from a millionnaire ex-tennis
player is going to find the next British tennis sensation.
We would rather see Venus and Serena Williams as ambassadors, as they are from an inner city themselves
meaning that kids can relate to them and are more likely to listen to them.
That said, it has more to do with the parents
than the kids. What Richard Williams achieved with Venus and Serena is nothing short of a miracle.
To think his method is a blue-print for success (it didn't work first time for Richard anyway) is still
clutching at straws.
If the government and LTA really want to bring tennis to inner cities then we suggest they start building
and funding tennis academies in inner city areas.
