2003 Dec 03 - Honda: Jeremy Bates loses Match 1
Jeremy Bates was defeated 6-4 3-6 6-10 by John McEnroe in The Honda Challenge, Royal Albert Hall, London, UK.
The former British No.1 (and current British Davis Cup Captain and LTA Performance Director) started the match
well and played consistently, while Mac disputed numerous line calls and smashed his tennis racket. However
it was Jeremy who broke the Mac serve twice and won the set 6-4.
Mac once again found it hard to keep his cool - great entertainment value though - but pulled himself
back into the match with two unanswered breaks of serve to take the set 3-6.
So it was a sudden death Champions Tie Break - the first to 10 points with 2 points clear - that would decide the match.
Jeremy drew first blood with a mini-break, but Mac who applied the pressure and forced the Brit to miss key
shots. Mac didn't appreciate being called "Jonny" by one member of the audience, so he retailiated by calling him an
"old drunk" and threatened to have him thrown out - Mac at his very best! Even with these distractions
the outspoken American still closed out the CTB 6-10 to win the match and take the applause.
It will now be difficult for Jeremy to finish in the top 2 in his 4 man ACCORD GROUP and claim a place
in the Semi-Final, as he has yet to face Mats Wilander and Guy Forget:
4th December - Bates v Wilander
5th December - Bates v Forget
