2003 Oct 14 - Henman out in R1 of Madrid Masters
Tim Henman was unable to build on his impressive performance in the CA Trophy last week, as he lost
6-7(4) 3-6 to the 22 year old American Mardy Fish in the first round of the Madrid Masters tournament.
The first set was all going to plan until Mardy broke the Henman serve, although this was short lived as Tim
broke straight back forcing a tie-break. As in the CA Trophy last week Tim seemed to tighten up in the
tie-break and unforced errors cost him the first set.
A poor start to the second set then gave Mardy the break of serve he needed to give himself some breathing
space, and the British No.1 was unable to reel him in - no pun intended!
Of the match Tim said:
"It's frustrating, but there are aspects I can work on in Basel next week.
"There's nothing wrong with me and nothing wrong with my game. I lost today but I've got two more
weeks to build on it.
"This has been a testing year of ups and downs - but you learn more through the downs.
"I've come through physically (after shoulder surgery) and feel my game is ready to move in
Next stop for Tim is the Davidoff Swiss Indoor from Basel, Switzerland.
