2002 December 24 - Rusedski out of Davis Cup

Greg Rusedski will play no part in the Davis Cup against Australia in February due recovering from foot surgery.

However, it seems likely that Greg will be fit enough to play again in January at the Qatar Open in Doha. This has caused mixed reactions as you would expect. The reason being that Greg feels the clay courts will put more strain on his recovering foot.

"I don't want to put the Davis Cup team in a difficult position by giving them last-minute notice if I had to withdraw," said Rusedski, who pulled out of September's World Group qualifier against Thailand with a heel injury - just four days before the tie at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena.

"I'm not sure how my foot will react in Doha, let alone the Australian Open. The surgeons warned me that it would take four to six months to recover from the operation.

"I'm going to Doha with a completely open mind, having just got back to training within the last two weeks."

Tim Henman will now become the main focus of our hopes, yet he is currently recovering from a shoulder operation.

Should we lose against Australia we will have to face another relegation play-off.
